Serial tag discrepancy?
 

The serial tag on my 982 has International Harvester on it (Oct 1980 model).
The 60c deck serial tag has Cub Cadet on it.
Should I assume that either the deck was bought after the buyout or that it was built after the buyout and technically manufactured by CCC and not IH since this Cadet was getting toward the end of IH production? I'm thinking that by the time the dealer ordered the pair, the buyout had happened and the Cadet was left over stock. Your thoughts?

I have never seen a 60" Haban with anything but a CC tag on it. Not to say that an IH tagged version doesn't exist. :bigthink:

The 60" deck was not an option for an IH built 982 it only was available with a 50" deck but the CCC built ones could have a 60" deck.

Further, the 60C deck was made by Haban and not IH nor Cub cadet.

John, I guess the answer is, someone put the newer style Haban deck on your older 982. :beerchug:

Didn't know it wasn't an option for 982's. The parts book I have is an IH version, it has most/all decks in it. I guess it was published after Cadet was spunoff but prior to the Tenneco buyout. Still doesn't make sense it was even listed, I thought once Cadet was sold, all the IH dealers had to become Cadet dealers if they wanted to continue selling Cadets and parts.

The serial tag looks basically the same style (size and logo) as the one on my 2072. The model numbers are certainly different. On the 982 it is a model 60C, followed by the number 194 374100.
On the 2072 it is a model 374190 followed by 60C.
I guess the 60C on my 2072 deck was maintained as an internal reference to the earlier design.

I know Haban built the 60 inch decks, but unless they sold them to another manufacturer such as Deere, Toro, Jacobsen etc., I would cosider them proprietary to CCC? At least that is how it is where I work, even if we are hired to do the design work.

Is there a known serial number list for decks (and other attachments as well). Also, does anyone have an idea how many years the 60" deck was built before front gauge wheels became standard (I'm assuming they were not considered an attachment).

The Haban deck was an attachment that was listed as one that fit a 982, but the IH 982's weren't offered with it. The sale of Cub Cadet line to MTD happened years before the Tenneco buyout of the AG line. So, the reason it is listed, is if you owned a 982 that was made by IH, but wanted to purchase a mowing deck for it, after the MTD buyout, then it could be purchased.

Initially, the AG dealers handled cub cadets the same way they always did, and MTD sold the machines to IH, and delivered to the AG dealers. They weren't made to sign a new sales agreement until almost 5 years later.


Haban was an equipment manufacturer all their own. They sold a lot of stuff to IH, but did make a lot of other styles of mowers for other tractors. I found reference of them making a belly mower for Mitsubishi tractors.


I don't know of any serial number list. The Haban model #374 is the earliest I can find, and it looks like in the parts book the front wheel was offered and it was a swivel caster style. I was thinking the early ones all had a wheel, but it didn't swivel. I may be wrong about that though.

The tractors were sold alone. They had options, such as tires, sleeve hitch, 3 point and such, but anything mounted to the tractor was considered an attachment. Even the mower decks.

Look up a 60C mower, it should pre-date the 374. I haven't parked both of mine beside each other to see the differences. I think I saw a handwritten note in the parts book concerning gage wheel attachments. I'll try to post a couple pics of the 2 decks.

After reading dozens and dozens of stories that range from, guys here who have literally saved tractors from the jaws of a crusher, who then put them back together to make them look as good as new (or better), to people who currently have their Grandfathers Cub that he bought new however many years ago and don't understand or remember when Grandpa had the "new" engine put in it... How can anyone presume that any 35 year old tractor has any of the original parts that it left the dealership with?

Is it not possible that the answer to this seemingly dilemma can be as simple as, the original deck for this machine was bent/broken/rusted out/run over by a train... and then replaced somewhere along the line with one that came from heaven only know where, including ebay or craigslist from three states away?

Unless a tractor has been setting in my garage since it was new, I feel that I can never assume anything about it, except that it is what it is, even if the PO did tell me that he was the original owner of the machine and it has never had a wrench on it.

I just looked at both Parts Tree and the Cub Parts sites and they both show 60" mowers for the 982. Parts Tree shows 2 different versions one with the front wheels and one without. The one without the front wheels is listed as a 60" rotary mower.
