Cub 100 paint question
Hello all. I'm redoing (not an actual restore) of a 100 and want to see what others are using for the yellow paint. I'm sure this has been discussed but I can't find a thread on this. It seems the yellow is called federal yellow for these mid sixties cubs. Is this true? I have also seen some use school bus yellow and it seemed ok but a bit orange compared to the original yellow. This is going to be a working tractor so I'm not looking for a perfect match and I'll be using spray cans for the job I suspect. I found school bus yellow in ace hardware brand paint and krylon. They both are way too thin with very little solids. I'm testing the color on the cleaned up front axle and am not happy at all. Is spray paint just really crummy and thin these days? Anyone have a brand and color name that I should try? I would love to find the paint locally as I don't want to pay for shipping and possible hazards charge. I know the cub dealer sells paint but it is really expensive and I'm on a budget. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

I'm still in the rattle can mode for now. This has been discussed numerous times here in the last few years.
All I know and can comment on from my experience is the cub cadet rattle is expensive, but I like it. I painted my 100's yellow with it, and it's holding up fine. |
Great looking tractor(s) zippy1! I can't wait to get mine back together. So the pictures depict the cub cadet dealer yellow spray paint? Might need to reconsider. How many cans of paint did it take for the whole tractor? Thanks for the reply.

There are a lot of threads on paint in this section (restoration tips), scroll down from your post, there are even more opinions :HeeHee:
http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=27313 In my opinion (I know) this is one of those things you get what you pay for, so it becomes a personal preference on what you will be happy with when it is done. I have used rattle can on a couple "working" tractors and so far I have been happy with the results. I also found Federal yellow is cheaper at a IH dealer than a Cub Cadet dealer in my area ($6 to $8 a can cheaper!). Good luck, |

Yes this is the cub yellow. It went on nice and dries fast, so it's easy for sanding between coats, biggest trouble with it drying fast is the overspray:bash2: But I wet sanded between each coat and laid the last coat very wet, almost to the point of having hangers, but didn't! Couldn't tell you how many cans I went through, but I know for what I spent it would have been much cheaper to have used a gun. Just sayin'. Here's a thread of it, you can read through it at your leisure. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=13735 |
Duplicolor School Bus Yellow is a good match for my cub. I use a black automotive primer. It initally looks a bit too yellow but darkens as it cures. Used it last week to paint a steering knuckle. An hour after I painted it I was beating it into place with a plastic mallet. Didn't mar the paint at all.
