982 driveshaft
I've got to rebuild the driveline in my 982, including the driveshaft. What type of material are you guys using. I'm thinking 4140 pre-hard, or would I be better to just use green 4140? Also have heard of some folks using stainless, what grade? Any known failures from using something too hard?

I used plain CRS when I eliminated the rear Flex Disk on the 782, milling a key-way in it for the 3 jaw coupling.
I don't know what the long term results will be, but @ over 400 hours I see no problem. I really like the true-ness of the coupling over the worn flex joint. If the need arises to remove the drive-shaft, just loosen the set screw on the front half of the coupling and slide the coupling forward, no need to drive out any coiled pin, or unbolt the flex disk. |

it is a "Boston" brand I just happen to have a few in my buckets of parts. |
I use 4140 pre-hard for any driveshafts I make. it holds up in my puller. that's over 80 hp. don't use stainless

Thanks for the help, your the best. No I am not going to try to dig through 3 years of your post's t find the info. Hope I can help you in the future. Mac |
Thanks for the comments. I'll probably go with pre-hard 4140 since I have easy access to it. If I think about it, I'll take the old one to work and check the Rockwell on it to see how hard it is.
