Onan parts
 

Been reading the handful of posts on here regarding Onan as well as searching the links as well as Google. Am I correct to assume Onan does not support the engines that came in 982's? It appears Cummins has bought them out and they are focusing on the generator market. So far I am very pleased with how the one in my 982 runs. Did Deere use this same engine?

Cub wasn't the only user.... but here is what you need to know. There aren't many parts available for those engines, and what is available, is getting very expensive. You should really have a plan for what to do with the motor, as when and if it decides to go, a replacement motor is necessary.

Are these engines considered as good as a Kohler Magnum? I know Onan has been around a long time, most of their old stuff was in RV's and welders. I'm the kind of guy that believes in fixing what is broke if feasible. Do these engines have a history of self destructing like Kohler KT17's or do they just grow old and tired and need rebuilding?

John, Onans are awesome engines and the B48G was used in a lot of applications like the JD 420. This place has about any part you will need for it.

The Onans are a little different and used sleeve type bearings throughout that actually held up well for an engine being 35+ years old if the oil was maintained. The rod design was changed and a new stronger rod is now available and also some engines had a problems dropping a valve seat. Good luck on yours.:beerchug:

I would take a good running Onan B48G over a Mag 18 anyday.

Glad to hear something positive about them. So far the engine sounds great. When I first got it one cylinder had more compression than the other, but it had been sitting for a couple years at least. I need to recheck and see if that has become a little more balanced. Also trying to find the Walbro # on the carb with no luck, maybe you have to pull it off to get to the number? I'm trying to find a parts book, I swear we used to have a set for Onan but it's been over 20 years since dad or I worked on one. Prior to that the dealer he worked for only had that line for less than 10 years and it was not real popular compared to Kohler, Wisconsin, and Briggs. Even Robbins was a bigger seller for them.

John, the carb should be a Nikki if it is original. There is a service manual for the Onan in the tech section also.

I kept running across that carb while looking for parts. What I have got is definitely a Walbro that looks the same. Nothing appears to be retrofitted. I've even seen sellers on Ebay referencing the Walbro carbs on 982 Cadets. Maybe more than one carb was used? I have seen that done on farm tractors.
Just went to look for an Onan parts book, can't find one. I think I just realized why, I'm pretty certain Onan was on microfiche!
