1772 updating complete

Well, its been a long couple of months and a pita clearing all this snow with my skidsteer instead of the snow blower but I believe it is complete. I had a few ongoing charging issues with turned into starting problems and a grinding noise when the frame twisted. I have always been of the mentality that if im fixing something I might as well make it better.

So first its the drive shaft... the grinding was a bad rag joint which took out a hydraulic line so out came the old clutch drive shaft and in went a 2000 series shaft with Sams couplers. Great work done my sam and the shaft is 100% once again. This issue fixed... done

Next the charging issue, this one snow balled a bit but the fist time I hit the key it was the sound of success. I replaced the starter with a newer gear reduction one which is a dream in the cold with this diesel. This was a direct replacement with only having to do some clearancing on the motor mount below the starter. This thing cranks amazing now

Next, I updated the alternator with a Kubota 40A one, this is the upgrade I was most excited about. it was easier than I thought it would be. I offset the lower mount about 1.125 and spaced it .75". I then elongated the top bracket hole then the alternator slid right in like it belonged there all along. As far as wiring it was simple, the main charge wire I ran to the battery with a fusible link inline, then the one wire off the plug I spliced into the yellow wire going into the factory voltage regulator (which I now eliminated due to the new alternator having it built in) I measured out a larger belt and whalla 14.2v charging at idle... a beautiful thing. U updated the key switch as well just to have a complete new system.

All in all, everything I did cost about $400, This thing is set for many years to come. Im very happy with the outcome.

Next will be the glowplugs... and going thru that system.

I'm going to enjoy this for a bit before I tackle that tho.

Nothing I did was overly difficult. The most time consuming part was researching the charging issue and what to do about it. It seemed everything I read... this tratcor was doing, all the way from lack of charging to the soliniod on the starter not engaging. Thats when I decided to replace the whole system. Have a very positive engagement in turning the key now. not a soft slop of a twist.

The most difficult part was removing the original drive shaft... not an easy process.

I'm an ebay junkie.... Im sorry, please dont judge me ;)

It was a night and day difference. It was 19 degrees last night and the thing cranked with ease. Granted I believe my original one was quit tired but still. These mini gear reduction startes are great... I have one in my Roadrunner as well, spins that big ole 400 effortlessly, even when hot.

Looks good Andy. How did the drive shaft work out vibration wise? Have you had a chance to run it around yet?
