Haban # 2 overhaul
 

I’m getting started on Haban #2. This is the deck that came with the 1782 that I picked up a couple months ago. It’s in pretty decent shape except for the rear hanger bracket. Looks like the PO didn’t know that the Habans are supposed to be run riding on the wheels. The bracket had been broken & welded, broken & welded at least 2 times. If you want to call the pile of poop welding. As you can see they didn't bother to remove the bracket and weld it on both sides. Now I get to grind this mess off, weld it and reinforce it. The lift control rod is also broken. No plans to replace it at this time since it serves no useful purpose with this deck. My guess is that riding around with it being the only thing hold the deck up caused a bending moment in the threads where it connects to the rock shaft. Anyway the deck is disassembled and just waiting for warmer weather so that I can sand blast it with the pressure washer sand blaster.

Got the plate fixed today. Ground off the mess they called a weld. What a PITA. After I ground the old weld flat it pretty much fell apart. Looks like almost no penetration if you look closely at the first and second pics. Thing was in bad shape, I tacked it together and cut a little filler for the area that was missing. Tacked that in place then burned it in good on both sides. Ground the bottom flat. Next I'll make up an additional brace that will bolt to the bottom lip of the deck. I did pretty much the same thing on my other Haban. The card board is a template for the brace I will be adding. Of course just about at the end welding and I ran out of wire, had to make a TSC run to finish todays work. Now it's cocktail hour. :beerchug:

Nice save on the repair. That is one of the ugliest snot glob welds I've seen in a long time :bash2:

That was a stick it back together quick cause I have a bunch of grass to mow and don't have time to do the job right jobs. When I'm done it will not come apart again and it will be better than the factory design. :beerchug:

I had a bunch of those huge, ugly, non penetrating crumbling booger welds on mine too...but that was one of the longest turds i ever seen...sometimes they just pop off with a chisel...like you said, "some people just shouldnt be allowed to use tools" .....by the way, nice haban..
