102 won't turn over

I recently bought a "one owner" 102 all complete. It has been rewired at some point but it was done very good. It hasn't been started in at least 20 years. The motor turns by hand and I very briefly touched the battery charger to the S/G and it started to turn. Electric issues are not my strong point. Would the first two places to start be the key/ignition and solenoid?

There are only two devices in the 102 start circuit. (1) There is the Ignition (or Key) Switch. and (2) a Safety Switch connected to the Brake Pedal that has to be depressed to engage the circuit.

So, it can be either of those device(s), a bad or broken wire or connection, or lastly, incorrectly wired.

You can go to the Technical Library Section and D/L the Wiring Diagram for your assistance.

I changed out the ignition switch and disconnected the clutch safety wires and still nothing. I don't think it was wired wrong because it was obviously used after it was re-wired. Any more thoughts?

There is also the starter solenoid that is down stream from the key switch and clutch switch. Positive starts at battery then through both of those switches to energize solenoid in the start position.the solenoid carries the higher amperage circuit from battery to s/g. Get yourself a cheap 12 volt test light and test this circuit. Solenoid is mounted inside dash behind battery

Disconnecting those wires on the safety switch will make it impossible to start. Cut the connectors off and twist the wires together. And as already mentioned go to the tech section and download the wiring diagram. Educate yourself before you have a real mess on your hands.

Good catch although I wouldn't recommend cutting the wires. Use a paper clip to jump them out if you have to temporarily of course if you don't have the test light or make a jumper with spade terminals.

I haven't done anything yet. The sad part is I don't even want it. I bought it to keep it from going to the scrap yard. I only have WF Hydros.

Not a bad looking 102 at all. Maybe, you can put it in the For Sale section, if you have no use for it. :beerchug:

I think that is an excellent tip.
