Picked up an Original today.
 

My grandpa and I just picked up an "Original" today, the wiring is all cobbled up, has cobbled up lights, has 3 switches you have to turn to start it, the starter generator is on backwards (Weird I know), and you have to start it in gear because it won't de-clutch. But the reason behind getting it was that fact that we wanted one, and the serial # is 1314. I checked and it was the first month of the first year they made the "Originals". It also has a push button start and I can't tell if it is an aftermarket one or not, I think I remember seeing an ad for a push button start, and a decent front blade, I know it's not an IH blade though. Now for the endless questions! I'm sure you're all excited :biggrin2:

1. Does anyone know why it wouldn't de-clutch when I push down the pedal?

2. Did a push button starter come with an Original.

3. Can I flip my starter/gen back around with the existing mount?

4. Should I get a wiring harness for the "O", if so, where?

Originals are notorious for clutches sticking when exposed to the weather. I'll let somebody with more knowledge about fixing it let you know how to do that.

The starter generator is probably off a different "flavor" machine and had to be mounted that way for correct rotation for the Cub.

My grandpa was going to ask if you can reverse the polarization by switching the terminals on the s/g. I'm not sure if it will work properly or not.

Congratulations! Nice starting point (I also have a first month O, close to your number!)
Let me take a stab at your questions...

1. Likely worn out clutch, check linkage and bearing for wear, doesn't sound like it is releasing, something bent, worn or out of adjustment, or even stuck to the disc. (look at manual for how it works and how to adjust it)
2. Yes, two position switch (off/on) and the push button to start (looks like the old time car light dimmer)
3. Your S/G looks like a Wheel Horse one, likely turns "backwards", I would get the correct S/G (it would have oil cups that early), may need to locate correct brackets, but are easily found.
4. I would replace it, several good choices, I have used Porch Elec. for Cubs, great quality, fair prices, several other choices, Brillman, and I have seen someone on the forum mentioned making a good quality one.
Take your time, get familiar with it before you jump in and you will enjoy the refurbish experience!

Could someone post a picture of a S/G mount for an original so I know what to look for?

Look at the parts manual, it will have a good detailed drawing. I believe it is the same on all K161's (7 hp) models, I haven't compared my O's to my 70, 72 or 73, but it should be).

Here is the lower bracket, it bolts to the block:

The top one is a strap with a slot in it, didn't see on on ebay right of, but is pretty common.

Dig through the manuals, it will help things come together better.
