Need some mowing deck advice
Okay, I haven't started my thread yet, but have been taking pictures, and will do so soon, I just want to make a bit more progress. I know, I know. Anyways, I am putting together a 982D, using a 2082, 1512, and some red paint. The PTO was shot on the D600, so I found a new Warner 5210-XX, meant for something else. The field assembly is identical, and the armature is close enough. The main difference is the pulley, and my original plan was to swap pulleys. Upon looking at it, the bearing is gone in the original pulley, so I did some math, instead of finding a new bearing. The old pulley has a diameter of 4.5", and the new one is 7". I plan on replacing the mule drive belt anyways, so that's not a factor. This will increase my blade tip speed from around 15,000 to 23,000 fpm @ 3600 rpm. I know the GOV/industry stays around 19,000, and I could always run her less than full throttle. I doubt it would overheat at 3,000 rpm. I will probably go through with this, unless someone can talk me out of it. The deck is a 374 Haban, and it will be gone through, as well, with new bearings, etc. Those bearings can handle the speeds, same with the new mule drive pulleys. Anyone see flaws with my plan?

Replace the bearing or find the correct size PTO for it. The D600 will not have enough power to pull the 60" Haban with the big PTO pulley. I had a 1572 with the same deck, the little smoker had all it could do with the 4.5" pulley.

Wow, Sam, that surprises me. I have no real experience with this deck, other than spinning it with half of a M20, which it DIDN'T like. The D600 never seemed to notice the 50C, so I assumed the Haban wouldn't be that much more of a load. I could always add that small IHI turbocharger. I suppose I should go ahead and stay with the factory size. Anyone have experience replacing a pulley bearing on this style PTO? Merry Christmas, by the way, and thanks for your help.

Nothing to it. Here is one off of a 2182. There are 2 bearings that you can pick up at any bearing store. Just pick up (2) 6206 double sealed bearings, tap the old ones out with a socket and a hammer, clean the bearing and pto with lacquer thinner and apply some red loctite and tap in place. Ther is also a good "how to" in the tech section here.

Hey, thanks Oak, I suppose that's the way I'll go, per Sam's suggestion. Good news is I can still use the new field assembly and armature. I just thought speeding up the Haban would be the best solution. I suppose an 8,000 fpm increase is probably too much. Maybe if it was a 5-6" PTO pulley...
Thanks again and Merry Christmas to everybody!!!!! |

Thanks for the advice guys, I finished it up today. The bearing came out of the new pulley with very little effort, so I reused it. Check out the old field assembly, I did some, but not all, of the damage during disassembly. Now I have a brand new PTO for less than $60! EBay search for "Warner 5210", and you too can get the same.

Nice job Cory, There's a lot of good help here. I'll be watching your 982D project. You know we all like pictures here. Good meeting you yesterday. :beerchug:

Good work, Cory!

Thanks guys. It was good meeting you yesterday, Gary. It's too bad we don't live closer.
