Steering Rebuild
1 Attachment(s)
I decided after new tires and front wheel bearings, it's time to check out the steering box. I took it all apart and cleaned everything up, but only found 1 bearing set. I looked in the manual, it's supposed to have 2. Another project.......

Are you sure the other set is not not stuck up Inside? That's weird
|
No, I pulled it completely apart. I also had about about 3/8" of vertical steering shaft travel.

I'm going tomorrow to a bearing supply house locally to see if they have the NICE 605, hard washer, and possibly an alternative to the thrust ball cup setup on either end of the worm shaft. I think I can re-machine the shaft and housing to accept off-the-shelf bearings. I know I can buy a rebuild kit to keep it stock, but what fun is that...:biggrin2:

Got it all put back together. Works much better! Of course, now I need to replace the ball joints to get the last major play out. Made a few modifications for readily available parts. Went to a heavy duty ball bearing on the bottom end. I kept it stock on the top bearing. I am going to try a thrust roller washer type bearing and races under the double nuts. It was much cheaper. I might turn down a grease cover for it. Enjoy...

Nice job Craig!:beerchug:

Now that's the way to turn down a cam follower. Man I forgot that you had made some of the one off parts before like the steering wheel cap and stuff, very cool, great job as usual
|
Is that cam follower Case hardened, or hard all the way through?
if just case hardened, it might be a good idea to re case or try all hardened. for longevity. |
