My first cub resto: 1961 Original

Someone asked me to post pics of my O in the introduction thread so I thought I would start a new thread here. I will try to keep it updated, but I may be really slow, I have a lot of irons in the fire!

I've never owned a cub myself but grew up riding my grandfather's around. A collector responded to my craigslist want ad for an "older cub cadet" and said he had a complete running O and a rolling chassis he would throw in for free. Both were pretty rough. He told me the chassis was a low serial number and even had taken a steel brush reveal the numbers 1154. "Pretty Cool!" I thought. I would restore that chassis and move all missing parts from the running cub over. Anyway, a sandblaster revealed a 7 that was filled in with primer. 11547. Ha!

Anyway, not much to look at now. I plan on doing some prep work until it gets warm enough to do some spray painting.

Let it be known that I have no idea what I'm doing. I have some tools and some basic mechanical knowledge, but that's about it. My cub cadet and garden tractor knowledge is very limited. Criticisms and advice are both welcome.

I forgot to take a pic before I started disassembling, So I propped the wheels up against it and took a quick photo.

This is the gearbox I do not intend on using. I just wanted to see what it looked like with some tractor supply paint on it.

Here's the current state with all the parts I plan on using.

lookin good!

These Originals are fun to play around with. There are a few quirks from all the other tractors but they are pretty simple to figure out and make for great fun after they're finished.

One issue with them is that the frame likes to crack where it meets the reduction housing (rearend). I see yours has been repaired. Not an issue so long as everything lines up where it should be.

I'm currently going through my Original and have a thread going on it right now. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=28649

If we can help, be sure to ask questions. That's one of the great things about OCC!
