Removing stuck field pole screws.

Any tips. I'm having a hard time getting mine off on my Starter-Generator

I have a thin 7/16" wrench that I use to hold the bottom nut, Then I use another 7/16" wrench to turn the top nut. Try to just barely turn the top nut back and forth, sometimes they will break loose and sometimes they are hard to unscrew almost to the end.

You gotta be real patient with them, cause it don't take nuthin to break them off.

Don't use a ratchet and socket on the top nut... You can't see what you're doing and you have to keep flipping the switch back and forth.

And if you turn the outside nut and not hold the lower one it will turn the whole thing and do damage on the inside where it is connected to the inner workings.

Not those. The ones that hold the field coils onto the side of the housing.

One of them there hand held impact wrenches will do it.

Agreed, or if you dont have one pb blaster and start it with a center punch/hammer and it should move but be careful not to damage them if you are reusing. I'm buying a rebuild kit for mine that comes with new screws, my field coil is open. What's up with yours?

For what it's worth, if you snap a stud off, it's fairly easy to find replacement studs. It's a little more difficult to come by #12 nuts in the hardware store though. Ended up buying about 100 from McMaster.

I've got a couple of s/g that I parted out and pieced together. One we took the screws out, as suggested, with a hand held impact wrench. Broke the tip though. Another, I tried removing the screws with a punch and hammer, but just started mauling the surface of the screw so I stopped. So be careful and good luck!

Alvy, where did you find a rebuild kit that includes screws? All I've ever found is kits with bearings, bushings, and brushes.

Did this today,Put an old chisel in the impact gun after grinding it to fit the screw head, chucked the S/G in a vice and off the screw came. This one has a bad field coil that was connected to the F terminal as it was not charging.
Toasty

I may have a replacement somewhere :bigthink:

Under Edit...
Okay I found a replacement, installed it,and we have chargedge now.
I need to pick up some bearings now to quiet the few noisy ones I have.
