Question about Engines

I have always wondered what the difference is between the engines that are used in the narrow frames vs the wide frames such as the quietline series. I know they are both Kohler but are the quietline ones more efficient or eco friendly??

No. They use a different starting/ charging system. Other than that they are pretty much the same.

Eco friendly...... LOL. Nothing was "eco friendly" when they made these tractors... Except for the fact that the grass wasn't tall after you used them.:biggrin2::biggrin2:

The main difference between the Kohler K series engines, from the beginning to the 1x8/9 series were pretty much the same. Starting with the Quietline (Q/L) Series the Starter - Generator was replaced by a Stator with a Sold State Rectifier/Regulator and they went to a traditional Flywheel Starter with a ring gear. That is the major differences.

Thanks for the info. Also what's this 1x8/9 mean? Thanks!

Referring to the series of tractor.... like 108, 109, 128, 129 (ETC) understand? the 1X8 were gear drive, the 1X9 were hydrostat.

One other difference I think is important (but not actually the engine) is the change to an electric PTO clutch on the Q/L tractors vs. the mechanical PTO clutch on the 1X8/9 and earlier series.
