Worked the Super kinda hard and she puked a front seal
 

Out back at the new place pushing some heavy piles of grass and I noticed smoke coming from up front of the hood and jumped off the tractor to see what was going on when I noticed oil dumping on the ground...

Shut it off as fast as i could and investigated....Front area was washed with oil so I figured it was the seal.

Tried to pull her up the hill with the the JD 318 but that was futile so out comes the wife and the 4 wheel truck....Slooooooo I tell her...

Pulled the engine out and off with the flywheel to see the front seal was out sitting on the shaft....

Gonna put new front and rear seals in along with breather gaskets, and de-carboning the heads with new head gaskets....

Never ends I tell ya.

Of course I cant do anything out there in the garage without my little helper getting into everything.!

Is that what it's called!! Wanted to power wash the frame area but of course it clouded up and got cold and windy.....Rrrrr... will get the parts this week and put her back together....

Any hints on the seals?? silicone or just put them in dry?

page 24 looks like the hot setup to keep the seal in the bore.

The outside of those seals are a type of rubber. They are supposed to be installed dry. I have thought before they needed something on them, just to have them come back out. Found that if installed dry, they seem to hold. Nice shop! Good luck! :beerchug:

Turf tires no weights on them or loaded....Dont get me wrong that Green Machine is a HD Garden Tractor too....Not a fan of Onans but it runs well....

I need ags on it...

Oh yea, your JD 318 would be a great garden tractor, and after I posted my comment, I realized in another thread that the JD is set up for mowing duty.

Man, I also noticed the bolt and washer screwed into the crank of the engine. I'm wondering if that was a better way to go, because the old Iron Line Kohler flat top engines seemed to have the stud on the end of the crank, secured with a nut. I have the same set up on my Kohler K241 as your's is pictured. Some one had done some machining "101", and made a terrific job at that!
