Recently inherited a 1620 with a bad Electric PTO. Searched ebay and found a used one with a buy it now of 75.00. Was quoted over $300.00 by my local dealer. Seems like a good price, just wondered if there was any knowledge as to whether I can find one cheaper.

Before I pose this question let me state that I have used as many search terms as I can think of to find an answer before starting a new thread, so, here goes... when trying to loosen the center bolt on the elec. clutch, what can I use to "back-up" or hold the entire pulley assembly from spinning. On the 1620 this pto is mounted under the engine, above the deck. The gap between top of drive pulley and bottom of frame is too slim for a pipe wrench or channel locks, and the diameter of the drive pulley is too big for anything smaller than a 36" pipe wrench and unfortunately there is not enough room under the tractor to fit a wrench that big. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

How big of a hurry are you in? I parted a 1620 because I needed engine parts for one of my Kohler twins, and I've got the clutch. I can't remember if it works or not. I know I wrecked the pulley under the clutch when I took it off, but I think I got the whole clutch off alright. If I can determine it works, you can have it for a lot less than $75. Problem is, it's in IL at home and I'm at school 1300 miles away in Florida at the moment, and will be until May.

I think I ran into a similar problem as you trying to remove it. I used an electric impact wrench to remove the bolt, but I may have had to turn the tractor on its side, or at least jack up one side a lot. I can't remember.

Thanks Matt, I need to get this running before then and am not so concerned about the cost... it is more important to have it ready for spring. Now is the time I can work on it, once Spring arrives I will not be able to. Also, the wife did not want me bringing it home in th efirst place but I stood on the fact that it would be running in no time... so I have to move this project along. Now, if I get to May and still need a clutch I will get back to you.

ulm210 - taking off the PTO clutch:
1) pull the spark plug wire off the plug and tape it back away.
2) best tool to break that center bolt loose is an impact wrench
3) you may need to soak the crankshaft with penetrating oil and ;leave overnite to help get the clutch/pulley off the engine crankshaft. If no good, clean best you can and judiciuosly apply a bitof heat to the PTO bore wall to also help it loosen up. Be patient - too much too quick will most likely caue bad things to happen.
4) $75 ain't bad for a replacement, caveat is that it functions correctly. Make sure it does before you lays yer money down.
5) put a bit of never-seize on that center bolt before torqueing it back up - won't be near as bad to break back loose if needed later.
