169 in need of an engine transplant

I bought a 169 over a year ago and have not had much luck getting a 16 hp kohler for it. There is a 316 JD for sale that is very close by and I was wondering how different the engines were between the two tractors. I would like to put my 169 back as close to original as possible and wondered how this would work. I have also been looking at wheel horse 16 hp kohlers and was wondering about them, as well. Any advice from 169 owners or people in the know would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Cub Cadet 123

Between the JD 316 and the Cub Cadet 169 or between the wheel horse 16 hp and Cub Cadet 169, or both? Can the oil pans be changed?

I have been looking at john deer 316 engines. I don't thank a john deer will work

To add to that I think the flywheels are different. I'm pretty sure the john deere and Wheel Horse one's are electric start. I know the arrangement of the coil, condesor, and the wiring the Wheel Horse is in different places. I don't know about the john deere because I could really care less about them. The best thing you could do is watch some videos/pictures or diagrams. That always helps me. Good luck on your 169! :beerchug:

Thank you for the great pics. However, I still don't know if a wheel horse 16 hp Kohler would work or not. Here is a picture of one:

I believe the Deere motor is the same, but the PTO end of the crankshaft is too long. The wheel horse motor, I believe uses the wrong oil pan to be used for the Cub...... and if that is correct, the blocks are different and a shallow oil pan won't bolt to it.

If that is incorrect, I will stand corrected. I am going off vague memory. :bigthink:

If I am right about the Deere engine..... you could just get the correct crank and swap it. Should be able to get a ground 16HP crank for less than $100

What is wrong with the original motor?
