Clutch work on my Quietline 1000
 

I found a local guy who restores old tractors, and I heard he is good with mechanical work, and reasonably priced. I spoke with him about replacing the throwout bearing in my clutch, and possibly the clutch itself if it needs it. The fellow does seem knowledgeable about Cub Cadets, and has a beautiful original that he restored that looks like new.

While he has it tore down, I want to check the rubber iso mounts, and I'm thinking of having him weld the support bar across the engine mount frame, as I've seen suggested here on OCC.

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on things I should check out while it is tore down, or suggestions about the clutch work. Thx.

The engine cradle mod is good. I did the muffler crutch, super steer and swapped a cast iron oil pan for the aluminum one on my engine. Also check the hydro fan and drive shaft rag joints.

While you have the engine out of the tractor, it would be a good idea to remove the front axle, tighten the axle pivot, and replace the pivot pin. It would be a good idea to replace the ball joints on both the tie rod and the steering drag link. This will considerably improve the steering and handling.

Under no circumstances put the clutch/drive shaft back together without having the pressure plates turned.

While you are there you should probably also replace part numbers 2, 3, 4, 6, the 21s and 25, thoroughly check and replace as necessary numbers 1, 8, 10 and 29.

It is worth the money to put it back together right the first time and not worry about it for the next 40 years, in place of pulling it back out every couple of years to replace a part that should have been replaced the first time around, plus whatever other damage this part caused.

I got the diagnosis for my clutch a couple of days ago. The drive shaft and clutch disc were fine. Someone had replaced the throwout bearing with a regular bearing, and a sleeve that they had machined ... and had welded up the release lever.

So my repair guy inspected everything, machined the pressure plates, and is replacing the throwout bearing with new, and is replacing the flex coupling. Cubcrazy Mike hooked me up with a like new release lever & pin (thanks Mike), and that should do it.

I got the dimensions off of the forum, and my guy is going to do the cradle mod, and muffler brace. He said my rubber mounts are still in fine condition, and so is the muffler box. He said he was impressed with how good of condition my tractor is in, for being a 1975. He said he sees lots of Cubs, and that my steering is very tight, and was impressed with the overall condition. I was glad to hear that from a "pro", since I haven't really been around very many different vintage Cubs.

Hope to have her back in a few days. We got more rain than snow during yesterday's storm, or I'd have been disappointed having to shovel snow.

The last thing that I really need is a nice original seat. Gonna have to try to get Mike to come off of one of those someday.
