782 Steering wheel center cap question.

I bought a center cap for my 782 and was wondering if anybody knows what it takes to make it stay in place. It fits in the steering wheel, but is real loose and spins around and would bounce right out if I left it in. Seems as though I might be missing something to make it a nice tight fit. Any help would be great.

how or what do they snap into or to what to cause the tight fit? Is there a lip around your center cap that causes it it snap into the center of the wheel? My cap is smooth all around the edge which will not let it snap into the wheel. Did I buy a bad wore-out center cap or is it possible for them to wear-out?

They don't really 'snap' in. They're an interference fit in the steering wheel. I can't imagine one wearing out...you'd have to sit there and spin it around for quite awhile to wear it enough for that to happen, I would think.

On the Quietlines which had a similar triangular cap,it calles for a 1 3/4 1/8 inch thick O ring. I bought one, installed it on mine and it's been fine since...I found this info in the service manual on this site.

on my 782 it just slides in n gets tight.

Maybe you could apply just a little bit of black gasket rtv around the edge to get it to hold snug. Yet, it would still allow you to remove it without damaging anything.

Poor description is not the case. The cap just fits in with no effort and you can clearly spin it with your pinky finger! That is how loose it is. If I were to leave it that way it would be lost the minute my 4 year old son sat in the seat. It will not stay on its own. I bought it used, but dont see how it could be worn.
