Repowering a 782 with a K series

I have a 16HP Kohler from a wheelhorse sitting in the garage and I'm thinking about putting it in my 782 for now until I have the money for the Briggs vanguard. I'm wondering how hard it would be to get it in the 782. I'm looking at getting the engine cradle from a 1282 so that should make it easier. But how will I get it to hook up to the drive shaft? Also will the 16HP be much different in performance compared to the original kt17? I'm also still trying to figure out what to do about a pto.

Thanks Mike

782

Hi Mike, What kind of oil pan is on that W horse? Some have a thick pan which raises the crank and can be used with the motor plate in the 782.You need to compare crank height to a cub motor. I've been told some jd motors work like that. The 1282 mounts raises a k motor 1 3/8" above the 782 twin motor plate. We have done this in pullers with clutchs and gear drives. As far as hookup to hydro, you will have to make some kind of drive hub and use a rag joint connection with a custom length drive shaft. Hope this helps. Mike

Why wouldn't he just use a drive hub off an older cub? This project is "dooable" just not "simple".

All mechanical things are possible with a torch and beer!
