Snowblowers for Supers
Does anyone know the difference between a 451 and a 551 snowblower? I'm looking to purchase a blower for the 1912, and am not sure what would be best. Any ideas, 451, 551, or single stage? Thanks, Mike

You need a 450. The 451 and 551 are designed for the 'cyclops' supers that have a larger diameter PTO clutch, and therefore different gears in the gearbox. You could possibly change the gears or put a smaller pulley on the blower, but getting the correct one would be best. An H48 (single stage) would also work, but I would be wary of those because all of the parts are NLA.
I'm not exactly sure what the difference between the 451 and 551. The 551 is newer and is probably an update of the 451, but don't quote me on that. I haven't owned either one. |
You also need a 448 lift kit or the parts in it to put a 450 on a super. This is because of the larger tires. The extensions get the angle of the blower right and without it you can't lift the blower more than an inch or so. Going through this right now with my 450 on an 1872.

Thanks for the info Matt G. and Squatch. I done some research on parts tree since your posts, and found some interesting things. Matt is right about the 451, it uses a slower ratio gear set and same pulley diameter as the 450. The 551 uses the same gear ratio as the 450, but the pulley diameter is not listed, different part number, so probably larger diameter. My questions now are: If I install a 7" diameter pulley onto a 551, will the unit fit onto the 1912? Will I need the 448 kit as used by Squatch on the 1872? Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help. Good info is always better than learning the hard/expensive way. Mike

You'll need the 448 kit, as your tractor is a Super just like Squatch's. Search the forum for '451'...someone else here changed the pulley on one to speed it up for use on an older tractor like yours. I think he mentions in his thread what size pulley he used. 7" seems huge in my opinion...what size is the OEM pulley on the 551?

Not sure on the 551 pulley size. Partstree lists the 450 and 451 using the same pulley part number, and show it as being 7" O.D. I assume the 551 pulley is even larger because it uses the same gear ratio as the 450. I have found a 551 for sale nearby, I'll keep you posted. Thanks, Mike
