starting /cranking

Hi - I'm a newbie with a 2544GT - Kohler 21 v-twin. She will start when jump started off car battery - but PTO will not engage - just getting a hissing noise. She will not start w/out jump - tested battery and get 12v+ but only 10 when running. Any thoughts? Lawn is a jungle at the moment!

First, welcome to OCC...:Welcome2:

From the sounds of things you may have two issues.

(A) Charge the battery up and take it to a reputable shop and have the battery "load tested". If not good, replace battery.

(B) IF you are only getting 10 VDC at the battery when the engine is running at full throttle, you either have a bad Voltage Regulator or some sort of bad wire connection(s).

As a suggestion, get the battery tested so you know there is NO battery issues. BEFORE you go and buy a V/R, there is some tests to perform first.
