582 replace engine
Hi guys my uncle has a 582 and the Briggs in it just broke a rod and he is looking for a replacement engine, he wants to buy a new one that will bolt in directly. Right now he has a v twin vanguard quoted but I am wondering if there are any other direct bolt in alternatives from kohler I know the k series will bolt in, but will a magnum or a good twin that is available for purchase bolt in? He's not sure if the vangaurd will work so he's looking into it
|
The K series isn't a direct bolt in. The KT would be. Vanguard should be fine with minor modification. If it were mine, I'd look for a magnum engine. 18hp twin cylinder or:American Flag 1: bigger.
|
Sorry thought the k series was in the 1282 , is there a higher hp magnum ohv? Like 16 hp or are all magnums flathead I could swear I saw a magnum or k series ohv 18 hp in a list the other day.
Are magnums still available new? What mods needed for the vanguard, motor mounts or driveshaft mounts? |
Magnums are all flat-heads. Commands are OHV. Kohler makes engines up to 24hp, I think is the largest. Yes the 1282 had a K series in it but you will need a different engine cradle.

16hp and under are single cylinder. Above that are twin.

Here is a k361 18hp ohv the one I was thinking of

Ok, well yeah..... But, like the video says, RARE! Besides, by looks of the height, I'm not sure it would fit. Easier to stick with something closer to stock. You could find another Briggs to put in it, or a KT17 (Series I or II), M18, M20, Vanguard, CH18, CH20 to name some easy ones. Or get the other engine cradle and do anything in the K series. But, for the life of me I don't know why you would want to put anything smaller than a 16hp in it. (Not saying you DO want to.)

Cool that is a big enough list to show him I'll have to look and see if any are cheaper than the vanguard
|
As far as I know, not too many on that list can be purchased new. (Not "reasonably" anyway.) Last time a priced a new Magnum 18, they were like $2200. (Maybe I was looking in the wrong places too.) The cheapest option is probably the Vanguard. Unless you can find a good used! They are out there, just takes time to find them.

Ya I thought the Briggs would be chespest and I already tried to convince him that a whole tractor would be the best for the money, local ih dealer has one of the white ones of that body style for sale $1500 the vangaurd is $1050 or theres a 1282 on clisy for 1100$ and I'm sure if he'd wait a little a cheaper red one would show on clisy or a local auction.
