Brand new Cub owner!
2 Attachment(s)
:bigthink:I am new to the forum and new to Cubs. I have been looking at Cubs for about two years. I would look on Craigslist and find incomplete tractors for to much money, or find a nice one for way to much money. I was coming home from Lowes a week ago and low and behold, I found a Cub by the road free for the taking. So I grabbed my ramps and come a long and after a lot of grunting"787 pounds worth". I had a red 1980 782.Now for my question. The front axle is broken. Is the axle unique to the 82 series or do others fit? Is Repairing this axle a viable option? I have a mechanic friend that says there is a procedure to follow when welding cast iron and he can do it. Does any one here have experience with repaired axles? I guess that was more than one question.

You lucky dog...
I would look for a replacement axle as they are a dime dozen. :Welcome2: |
Give the sponsors at the top of the page a shout, I'm sure they have what you need to fix it.

And, with a little looking, you can put a Super Steer axle in it, I am pretty sure! :bigthink:
That would be a cool machine! Great find. |
Welcome :beerchug:
Free is a good price, especially for a 782. I would like to know how the axle was snapped off though :biggrin2: :beer2: |
Haven't had a chance to get it running as here in Texas we have been in the 100's for days so tinkering after work is out of the question. At least it's all there and I don't have to search for missing pieces. I am impressed with the quality of the parts. Will share more pictures when I start on it. I'm in north Texas so I will start looking for an axle locally.

Congratulations on your wonderful find and welcome to the forum! What a cub to start with. You should be able to find a replacement axle for a reasonable price and hopefully get it fired up and alive once more. Keep us posted on your progress. Cub Cadet 123 |
nice find!
the axles used to be not so common or cheap .......i hit a tree when i was like 12 and broke the axle on our 127.......had a welding shop fix it and it was never a problem.....axle is still in one piece 30 yrs later |
Welcome to OCC. Great first tractor.
Replace the axle, would be fixable, by why if you can find one. As the others said, check the sponsors, or Ray may chime in with something. |
