Kohler M-18 engine repower
I have a 1872 with bad m18 engine. Has anyone here replaced this engine with something else? If so How?

Welcome to OCC! If you are going new I would probably say Kohler Command or a Briggs Vanguard. What is wrong with the M18?

My son and I have a 2072 that has a 18 HP Kohler Command. It works well but is not just a drop in replacement. There are several differences in engines. The wiring is much different and the drive shaft will have to be custom made as the original shaft will be too short. Enginewise there is no difference between the 18 hp, the 20 hp and 22 hp models. The only difference is the carberator size so it is easy to use any of them or change any to a more or less hp but for the life of me I cannot see any reason why anyone would go for less hp.

Making noise like gov is ready to go. Also low on compression. Cost to much to overhaul.

To the OP, if you replace your motor, PM me if you want to sell your old one, I'd be interested. Won't give you much for a bad engine, but I'd give a little. |

J-Mech you are correct, our 2072 already had the 18 hp command stuck in it. After we put it in it's right position so the PTO was better lined up the original drive shaft was 2 inches too short. Oh well it is working better now.
