CC 122 Clutch sticking
 

So figured I might as well use my first post to ask a question. :-P

I have a 122 that I recently picked up that runs like a top but the clutch wants to stay engaged. You can tap the disks to break the loose again but it just seems to want to go back to being stuck. It seems to be the front one (near the engine) more then the back one.

The gap looks good, it's almost like the disks are sticking to the friction disk.

Easy fix or does the clutch need to overhauled?

I've been around Cubs for a long time but more hydros then standards.

Odds are it is the teaser spring between the clutch disc or the driveshaft has wear in it or both. Sounds like its time for a rebuild.

A clutch is easy to rebuild if you have the right tools.

More than likely Merk is exactly right (he is one of the people here who you can always trust).

With the engine NOT RUNNING, hold or lock the pedal down, and see if the rear plate moves rearward or if it's loose enough to move easily (will only move a tiny amount because of the pin going through it). Then check the clutch disk to see if it moves freely.

If both of the above mentioned things do not happen when you push the pedal down, then you will need to figure out why.

While you are there, once the clutch is loose (with the pedal pushed down and the transmission in neutral) the drive shaft should also turn easily.

What's funny is when I picked it up it was missing the clutch cover (now I know why), it bothered maybe once or twice since then but I would just use a long punch and give the disks a little tap and I was off to the races again. I just got a cover and installed it, now it sticking no stop and of course tapping it is way more difficult.

So I was talking to some one who said they had the same thing happen when the disk faces got a little rusty from sitting out in the rain.

Well, this problem really cropped up after a gave it a bath with the pressure washer....

So, to try and clean them up I just slipped the clutch in 3rd gear for a bit. I ran around the yard for a few minutes after clutching and shifting and it didn't stick again!

Probably could still stand to have the faces cleaned up and the rest gone though but it works!
