HELP!! Best way to remove a broken roll pin in the rock shaft??

Worked on my sons 149 and had to replace the valve that feeds the hydraulic lift cylinder. After that it still wont pick up the plow. I discovered the rockshaft roll pin on the outside of the frame(the bracket the lift lever for the snow plow hooks to). So I pulled the ends of the roll pin on each end off with pliers. I ended up removing the rear fender and seat to get better access, but now I have beat mercilessly on the broken roll pin.I started with a small punch and tried going up in size from there but that pin doesn't move or want to attempt to move. Can I heat it and try to remove it? What size drill could I use to try that if all else fails? I really don't want to remove the shaft if necessary so that will be my last option..What size roll pin should I get as well??

Throw away the WD-40 and spray it with PB Blaster, best off to use a spiral pin punch.

In the event that you don't have a spiral pin punch try using a smaller punch to "free up" the center of the spiral, that will help to break the outside of it loose. Spiral pins are pretty tough you may or may not be able to get it drilled out.

If you heat the pin cherry red with a torch, that'll anneal it and make it softer you you can drill it if you have to. If it's rusted in there, that'll also help free it up so you can drive it out. You may not be able to drive it out because that pin is probably in a million pieces and the holes in the rockshaft and arm are probably all galled up, too. Good luck!

I always use Gods gift to mechanics (PB Blaster) and have been soaking that thing for a couple hours now. You are right tough as heck!!! Went to the mall and dealt with all the idiots and tried getting a new set of punches at Sears..Man was I PO'd that they had absolutely none in the store...

On the other hand, That pin is indeed stuck to the outside walls and I can see a tiny bit of light through the hole. I think I am going to end up removing the other pins and take the shaft out so I can heat it. I will then use a light application of grease on the rockshaft when I reinstall it... The things you do for your kids!!!:bigthink: Maybe I should just start:beerchug::beerchug::beerchug:

Pay attention to Wild Bill!!

1) Use Roll-Pin punches to remove roll-pins!! Kinda makes sense doesn't it?? Yes, Sears does carry a good set but they are also available at your local Case/IH dealer (where I got mine) and IIRC I've seen some at bearing supply stores.

2) Reassemble all metal parts of assemblies exposed to the elements with anti-sieze! There is a hi-temp version also!! I get mine at NAPA.

i say go with a punch that just makes it in the hole. you want tobe hitting on the very outsides of that s.pin. dont be useing punches that will make the pin wider when you hit. hit from both sides if you need. you'll get it. or the smallest drill bit, go buy a good one, and drill slow. thats all.:BangPC:

Finally got the pesky pin removed, but it was probably the worst job I have encountered on these tractors.Replaced the hydro fan on the driveshaft as well as some other minor fixes. Just waiting till tomorrow to pick up the new pin and it can go back to its rightful home. Supposed to get 4 inches of new snow by the end of next weekend so I may get to try my plow out soon as well as the AG's.

Glad you got the pin out. I may have to get me some roll-pin punches. Where do you guys get yours from? The nearest Case-IH dealer for me is about a 45 min drive. Any other places?

Sears, for one. Decent hardware stores should also have them.

bignastyGS - I'd like to add something here. Be sure when you install that new pin to run a safety tie wire threw the middle of it and tie it off. You can never be too careful. This way if that new pin decides to slip in the hole some day the wire will hold it in place. Just my thought.
