2182 governor trouble
I have a 2182 with 60" deck. It mows excellent until you get in heavy [ thick ] grass areas in the yard, then it drags the engine down. It seems as if the governor is not working. If you stop the tractor for a moment, it will pick up and go. I can't find how to check the governor adjustments in my books. Anybody have this happen? Thanks

Tuned and serviced [oil, air, hydro, fuel filters] 2 months ago when i bought, 10 hrs. since. Acts up only when mowing, can't get it to do it any other time;[ can't load eng. enough to make gov. work] when in shop.

A couple things I'd look at. Just my guess that the grass id a bit damp considering how nice the weather has been lately. See if you have a bunch of build up under the deck. Next when I picked up my 2182 it ran decent or at least I thought it did, that a look at the spark plug I pulled out of it. So I put 3 new plugs in it, no change, new cap and rotor, no change, fuel and air filters, no change, new carb, yep no change. Pulled the plugs and found that one of the brand new plugs was NG. Now we are a happy camper. Maybe it's just me but the odd thing about the 3 cylinder eng is the tone doesn't seem to change much if it's only hitting on two holes.:bigthink:
If any of you 2182 owners need a good carb you know who has one :bash2::bash2: |
Thanks Sam, i just cleaned the deck before mowing, i was wondering about the plugs, i think i'll pull them and look.

Better check the cap and rotor too!

Ok, i finally got checking this thing out more. The gov. is working, i took the hood off so i could watch while mowing. The plugs are all looking great. I.m mowing maybe 3in. of grass tops and the engine is losing power sometimes,if i slow the hydro a little then it picks right up and goes. [ 60 in. deck at half travel speed] My other 2182 w60in. deck never missed a beat mowing the same. Any other ideas on my problem? thanks.

Refer to post #2. Did you do ALL of those things? There is more to a tune up than just changing spark plugs.
When was the last time you changed: Dist cap and rotor plug wires drained the bowl on the carb What plugs are in it? Are they the correct ones? Did you check the timing? When the governor start trying to give the engine more throttle, does it open the carb all the way? Need more info. :bigthink: |
The plugs are correct ones,i've had carb off and cleaned completely,i have no book that gives me the timing specs. so i can't check the timing.the gov. is opening the carb fully.I have not changed cap, rotor or wires.the tractor will sometimes run for an hour and not miss a beat, the next time it acts up in minutes.i replaced the fuel pump and filter this week, the pump only made 1.3lbs. pressure, the new pump is 3.2, still the same.
