Serial Number Help

Hi Everyone,

I picked up what is supposed to be a 1000 for my father-about to start a frame off restoration.

Despite K241 tins, there was a K301 underneath. A lot of mismatched fasteners and poor care so I'm wondering if this is a 1000 or 1200 or possibly some other model.

Is there a way (other than confirming the 1000/1200s fall into this time period of s/n) to determine if this serial number matches a 1000?

Thanks for any help.

It rolled out of the Factory as a 1000.

Just out of curiosity, how did you determine that the engine is a 301?

1000 Serial Number Help

Thank you for the serial number assistance.

The block is stamped "K301" so I'm assuming this means it is a K301? I'm new to these older motors so please let me know if I'm mistaken.

Thanks.

I know some 10's came stamped from the factory with K301 on them. Your best bet is to measure the bore and determine from the findings what you have. I have 2 10's in the garage right now with K301 on them. Not sure why it is like that, maybe that they can be safely bored to 12hp size without making the wall thickness to thin. Just a guess on my part.

I'm not ready to take it apart to measure just yet but I've read the 301 should have a deep sump which this does not appear to have. My guess is a mistake or poor practice of using blocks with "K301" on them despite being a K241...

Pics attached.

The "model tag" on the blower shroud would indicate the model number.

Do not for a minute think Kohler made a mistake or used poor practice.

241/301

I don't trust blower shrouds as many can fit different motors-Command 18/22, 241/341, etc.

I know-shame on me for doubting Kohler!

Thanks.

From all the postings on this site, as well as other Cub & Kohler sites, it is NOT that common to see where someone has switched the shrouds around.
