No Transmission - GT2550 won't move
With my Cub Cadet GT2550 lawn tractor, I was mowing my field today for only 45 minutes (just after I got it back from the dealer for a bad ignition coil), and now the TRANSMISSION won't engage! It JUST GOT a "Silver Service" (lube/oil/filter, sharpen blades, general tuneup, etc.). All I did was stop the tractor for a minute (to clean out the discharge chute from accumulated grass), and now my Cub Cadet GT2550 won't move! My mechanic son checked the rear transmission fluid and fiddled around with the transmission release knob at the back -- nothing.
My "snakebit", problematic Cub Cadet only has 127 hours on it. Of course, it's not under warranty anymore. We pushed it up onto our trailer, since the drive wheels are freewheeling. Could the problem simply be some electrical switch? The central Shaft Drive is rotating when the engine is running, whether or not I step on the throttle or not. It doesn't make any difference whether my key is turned to the normal position, or the "reverse mowing" position -- the tractor won't move. SO, I'm hauling it back to the dealer for the 2nd time in a week. Any ideas or recommendations? :bigthink: |
not sure if there are any roll pins or shearing points on that driveline, id check those first. could be something simple.

Sorry kids but no roll pins on the GT2550. If the drive shaft is turning you have a problem with the linkage, pump or trans gearing. And the drive shaft is pretty much bullet proof.

Still Waiting for Repair After 2 Weeks
The local Cub Cadet dealer (Country Homes Power Equipment) finally got around to diagnosing my GT2550's transmission. The hydraulic pump has failed, and the tractor only has 130 hours on it! They called Cub Cadet to see whether the 5-Year Limited Warranty covered the (supposedly) durable Shaft Drive Transmission -- they refused to cover it. So, I'm left with the repair bill.
I'll never buy another Cub Cadet again -- it's a POS. They won't back a defective product: 1) Seat mounting bracket broke. 2) Cylinder ignition coil failed. 3) Hydraulic pump failed. |
How old is this thing? How long have you owned it?

I have owned the cursed, POS GT2550 for just over 4 years (May 2009). How convenient that the 3-year warranty (and Limited 5-Year Warranty) covers nothing! To get the POS, I parted with $4,500 and should have bought a John Deere. I'm almost tempted to just scrap the Cub Cadet, and not waste any more money on it.

Just my 2 cents but I would call Cub my self and explain the fact the you don't even have 150 hours on it and that if they are not willing to do something that you will talk to a lawyer. Maybe that will get someone's attention.

It might not hurt if they refuse to cover the bill/repair that you visit popular cub cadet forums and you intend to stress the problems you have had, along with how you have maintained, and used the dealer to service/work with your mower. Not in a smart elect way, but that you will let people know what kind of problems you have had, and no customer service !
