LT 1040 question about rearend
 

Just acquired a Lt 1040 with a house, so I downloaded the owners manual and parts manual and it gives no reference to rear end maintenance but in the parts manual it lists 19 oz of grease .............am I missing something? And it has some gear whine.

Looks like a variable speed belt drive from what I see in the parts breakdown. Never played with one but I don’t think I would use it for anything other than cutting grass.

my 1042 manual states, "The fluid level cannot be checked
and on most models, cannot be changed"

Yeah, if I remember correctly those were known for a rear end whine. I remember taking one completely apart, cleaning it, regreasing it and it still whined. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
