108 wont run without battery

I jump it off with a battery and it runs fine while hooked up, but disconnect the hot or ground it stops. Does the s/g provide the voltage that goes to the points when battery isnt hooked up? I placed a test light on hot wire for starter generator and it barely lights up. got the tractor running and it just shot off like a rocket and ran into my 147 and drag stuff over 4 acres before i stopped it,lol. Thanks

Yes you need a battery and I wish I could have seen that show. :biggrin2:

It should run without a battery but it's never a good idea to do so. Can burn out the V/G or S/G.

OK, I should have said it will run without a battery as long as it's running fast enough to charge. :beerchug:

As long as the charging system is up to par.... It will not hurt it to run without a battery. The only thing the battery does in the system when not being used is act as a "condenser" absorbing electrical irregularities or fluctuations. There really isn't enough electrically going on on this particular machine to hurt anything.

I 100% agree with the above.

My 8 year old nephew was driving the '39 Chevy down the road on the farm, I was 12.

He hit a bump. The battery falls out of the battery box, under the floor boards.

The car kept running great, until we get to the back of the farm. :bigthink:

The car engine cut off when he pushed in the clutch. He was smart enough to catch it in gear, and keep it running until we got it back to the shop.

It would have been a 2 mile walk otherwise.

He was a pretty good 8 year old driver!!

That '39 Chevy had a similar charging circuit as the Cub Cadet.

108 Electrical

We placed another starter generator on it and it still does the same thing.
will not run without a battery. What else could be the problem? How do you test the voltage regulator and S/G.?

Ok, so there are apparently two threads going here for the same thing, same tractor. Just hook a multi-meter to the batter and check to see how much voltage it has. At WOT it shouldn't be more than approx 14.6v. At Idle should be above 12v. Are you just disconnecting the battery as a test? .... Or is there some other purpose here?

I have no clue why you are persistent in ignoring or refusing to recognize, FACTORY drawings of the Ignition Circuit for the 147. In looking at both the Kohler and Cub Cadet diagrams, they clearly indicate a battery needed for ignition.:beatdeadhorse:
