More Starting Problems

Pulled the 782 into the garage last evening to do a steering box overhaul. Had to start and re-start a couple times to raise & lower the hydraulic lift in removing the mower deck. No problems although it did backfire once. Removed the steering column/box, did the thorough clean, re-pack, and re-install.

Went to start the motor to lower the deck carriage to reinstall deck, but wouldn't start. Turn the key and lights come on, but past that, nothing...no sound or clicking.

Will start investigating tonight with a wiring diagram and multimeter, but do you all have any suggestions as to what this might be? It's been sitting out, so it might be the connections again.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

My guess is you have a connection problem and it's in the area of the steering column, something probably got moved when you worked on it.

Cleaned up connections and still no power is getting through to engine. Jumped the two terminals across the solenoid and got spark and engine turned over, but couldn't get it running.

Any suggestions? Replace ignition switch?

Link to the wiring diagrams for the 782 from the tech section. Get your test light out and find out what the problem is before spending $$$$ on parts for nothing.

Check the wires at the fuse holder (if it's a newer model) and make sure they didn't come loose, then they go to the amp gauge in the dash, PTO switch and brake switch. Good luck!

Did you check the fuses? I would check the wiring under the dash really well for a bare spot in the wiring or a severed wire.:bigthink:

I thought about the fuses too. Did a continuity check on both; both checked out. Funny though, one of the fuses is white rather than clear glass. Checked out all the same.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the 782 wiring diagram, so will start with the wiring behind the dash and see what I can find out.

Ugh! Electrical problems!! Just my luck, do a mechanical repair and end up with an electrical problem!!

One of my fuse holders is broken. Would that allow the lights to operate, but not prevent current from getting to the solenoid?

Another question: when I tried to jump the solenoid with a screw driver, the engine would crank over (like trying to start), but never fired up. It should have started, right (it was running fine before)?

SumBum 05-15-2013 09:11 PM

According to the diagram Sam posted the lights and ignition are on separate 10 amp fuses.

Even with jumping the starter with the screw driver, it still wouldn't start unless the ignition has power.

If you have a meter. Check for voltage at the broken fuse holder. Check the line coming from the switch to the fuse holder while in the run position. The other side of the fuse holder should be running over to the pto switch.
