1650 Transmission Issue
Hi Everyone,
My 1650 has been dripping oil from the front of the transmission for the last couple months. Sometimes I use it and have no leaks for a few days, other times It starts dripping shortly after I finish using it. It is either coming from between the pump and the trans, or from the brake rod o-ring area. Something I noticed last night after I drove it 50' and parked it in the garage was that there was a little bit of pressure when I removed the fill plug to check the transmission oil level. I blew snow with it all winter and it never hesitated, but it sometimes leaked afterwards. I went plowing with it today and it ran fine. I let it sit between sessions and decided to open the plug to check the level again and it sprayed fluid out. It was not running any of the times that I checked it. I drained all of the old fluid out before winter, cleaned the whole inside with diesel fuel as a rinser, and filled it with Traveller brand (Tractor Supply) hydraulic/transmission fluid that says it meets the Hytran and Hytran Plus spec, new gaskets and axle seals, and a 1410 napa filter. Is there supposed to be pressure built up in the differential part of the transmission when it is not running? I figured that the vent on top would not allow it to pressurize. Maybe the vent is clogged? I just don't want to wreck something. This makes sense why I would get random leaks. I just need to get it to vent. Thanks, Jonathan |
the vent on these is a pourus type material in the top of the housing just ahead of the rear cover if it's ever been painted the paint will plug the pours and not let it breathe you'll need to scrape the paint off of it and use a wire brush to try to clean it up as good as possible

Well, I figured out what the problem was with the help of my dad. The top of the vent was completely clean. He reminded me that the top of the rear end (inside) was all waxy when I cleaned it out and the the bottom of the vent might have been the same way. So.... I popped the cover, pushed the vent out from inside, and it was caked. I wiped it off and still couldn't feel any compressed air when I tried blowing through it (15 psi). We soaked it in parts cleaner for a while, and then I could feel air blowing through it. Took it out and plowed for a half hour, came back, let it sit for 5 min, loosened the fill plug and it had no built up pressure. BINGO!:IH Trusted Hand:

Glad you got it fixed. If it gives you anymore trouble you may want to try this little mod. I drill and tap the top of the case for a 1/8" pipe fitting and then put a hose adapter in it, some hose and an in line fuel filter. My guess is that you could use the hole that you already have for the existing vent.

That won't work for me because I have a rear lift in the way. Thanks for the idea.

Glad to hear you got it fixed!
