Houston I think I have a problem? (Steering wobble)
 

My #127 steering has a distinct wobble,

Side to side= 1/2 inch.

Up &down = about the same. :bash2:

How much time do I have before it goes kaput?

Is this a big job to undertake? I have no clue?

Any suggestions?

Check wheel bearings for tightness/condition same for spindles.
Check tie rod ends for tightness/condition
Check axle pivot pin for tightness/condition.
Check lower steering draglink ends for tightness/condition
Check lower steering sector cam follower for tightness and condition.
Could be any one of those and/or a combination of 2 or more.

Just may be time for a steering/axle/spindle/bearing re-hab.
Just finished up doing a 1250 today

If Ya have to hire someone to do it and furnish parts I could forsee this job costing upwards of $100 maybe more just for parts alone if you use good quality stuff.

Just a little more info on what is loose and just maybe we can give you an answer. No warranty expressed or implied. :biggrin2:

Sounds like the bearings may have come loose in the steering box with that much up and down movement on the steering wheel. My 123 did that before I ended up rebuilding the steering box, sounds like it might be time to dig in:biggrin2:

I got a kit from ccspecalties which was $35 shipped, included the super steer upgrade, a new foam seal for the top of the column and a ball bearing to replace the plastic bushing that is on the top of the column.

I also bought 4 new rod ends from mcmaster carr $21 shipped. I got the stock style ones, you can get the upgraded HD ones for about $10 more

My bearings and cups were good, so was my cam follower but if you need those parts its $40ish for the bearings/bearing holders and $30ish for the cam follower. Axle pin is about $20.

The grease in there probably looks disgusting too. Pop the column, take it apart and asses the situation. Worst case you will probably need to spend about $150 in parts to get it to better than stock condition and it will be that good for another 40 years. If most of the stuff is good youll be out about $50-$75. I didn't want to do this kind of stuff on my cub when I started the refresh (planned on only replacing what was broke) but that went out the window about 2 weeks into it.

Turn the wheel and look at all the linkages to see where the slop is. The rod ends are an easy and cheap fix.

Well, just sitting there I can move my steering wheel, side to side. I fired it up & took it for a spin & the same.

Just that the steering wheel can be moved as stated. Front end is tight just the wheel:bash2:
