V/R questions
 

2 things:
1. I noticed the ground lead assembly wire was broken, but the tractor was still running fine. How is this possible without a ground? Could that cause the coil problem that I had?
2. Before the ground wire was broke (I think) the starter would turn over at a lower rpm, while the key was off. Is this an adjustment I can make within the V/R?:bigthink:

To generalize as you don't mention what you are working on,
no tractor should turn over with the key off, just in the start position.
The broken ground on the regulator would not make any difference in the running just in the charging of the tractor.
If it was charging correctly, it is possible it was grounding through another means.
As far as affecting the coil, it is possible if it was greatly over charging, it could overheat the coil because of excessive voltage, but most generally it would boil/ruin the battery first.

Pitted contacts on the CUTOUT RELAY in the regulator assembly could be causing the relay contatcs to remain closed after the ignition switch is turned off. This condition can back-feed battery power to the SG even when the ignition switch is off. Check out this recent post for a more in depth explanation.

Well, I went through the V/R with a fine tooth comb, cleaned contacts, adjusted tolerances, replace ground wire. seems all good now! Thanks for your help!
