Quick 782 question
Hey guys quick question for you all. I have a 782 that has been hard to start ever since the weather got cold. Had some spare time the other day when the temp outside was a bit warmer. The battery in it is a Wally world special dated 2009, so I wasn't suprised to find the battery dead. About a month ago, I got the new to me trupowers on it along with a newer set of cub plastic/ cement wheel weights installed (I would guess these weights weigh in at around 70 lbs plus each) which made the tractor a bit heavier to shove outside and hook her up to the jumper cables. Anyhow, I got it to jump start, had to pour a little gas into the carb to get her to fire off (maybe the fuel pump is going south on me). I drive it around the block, and let if run for quite some time, hoping the battery would pick a charge, well it did. I was able to shut if off and restart it without issue. The next day it was warm also, so I decided to try and start it again. Again, the battery was dead, not a real suprise based on it's age.
But, okay, here comes the real question this thread is all about (sorry for all the rambling on here), after if failed to start, with the key off, I noticed the hour meter was running. I am assuming the ignition switch must be bad, I can't think of anyother reason why the hour meter would be spinning with the key off. I have no idea how long this has been going on, but would explain the dead battery, am I right assuming that I need to order an new ignition switch? Thanks! |
my hour meters turn for a few seconds once the keys off. like 5-10 seconds i think. maybe thats normal? also my 782 wont start in winter unless i put 10w30 oil in it. with straight 30wt it cranks but never fires.

I noticed this behavior on my hour meter on my 1650. It runs for like a minute after the key is turned off. Must be a capacitor in the meter itself.

It is a mechanical clock, electrically operated, so there is a bit of "run on" till the spring winds down, but not much maybe only 1/2 min or so on the hour meters, after the swtch is turned off.
The GM clocks in the 50's were simular operated. An electro magnet would pull against a spring, when the mini breaker points closed, and you would hear a "click" as it rewound itself. They ran for about 5 minutes, before rewinding. In them days when you would "park" with yer lady, you could hear it, if you were quiet, and paid attention. But most of the time we had other things on our minds Ha,LOL! |
The clock will run for a little bit like others have said, all mine have and my current one does.

thanks for the help and replies. I will toss in a new battery in the next few days and see how long the hour meter runs after turning off the key. If it does as most say, runs for a few seconds, I will just assume it is the nature of the beast. If it runs contiuously or for longer than 1/2 of a minute, I will order a new ignition switch.

If you put your ear to it, you can hear it ticking, then stop.
