Farm and Fleet Hy-tran fluid
 

I got a price for the Hy-tran fluid at a Cub dealer today and I'm really not wanting to spend 8 bucks a quart. Does anyone know if the Hy-tran fluid at farm and fleet works good in the cubs. It says it meets cub/case standards. Plus its 12 bucks a gallon. Thanks a lot guys I just do want to screw this thing up. Jon

Can't speak for farm and fleet, but i've used cenex fluids for the last five years with no problem. Can't justify putting 60 plus dollars worth of fluid in a 100 dollar tractor.

Do you have an IH dealer near you? Check the price from them. My nearest IH dealer is an hour away, but hytran is one of the things i will make the trip for. They have it in 2 or 2-1/2 gal. jugs. or 5 gal. buckets. Some of them have it in bulk tanks, if you have a clean container they will fill it for you. Just call and ask. :biggrin2.gif:

Don't know what you're putting it in, but I have used the cheap stuff from the local farm store for years and never had a problem and I'll bet that a lot of the other guys have too, whether they admit to it or not.

I've been using Mobill 424 hydraulic transmission fluid in a 127 and Traveller Universal trans/hydraulic fluid from TSC in another 127 and a 149 with no problems. I'm sure there will be others on here to tell you all the problems you're gonna have if you don't use the proper fluid but I don't believe it or see any reason to pay the high price for the correct stuff.

I'm not sure any of those other fluids have the water absorption capabilities of Hytran, which is a big plus in my opinion. If you buy it from a CaseIH dealership, it's not that terribly expensive, and it's not like you're changing it all the time. But it's your tractor and you can do as you please with it...

Here is a service manual for a sundstrand hydro unit.-- dated 1974
As most know, it is used by other color vehicles as well as tractors mowers Etc.
pg 10 lists various oils compatable http://www.cushmantrackster.com/pay-pdfs/sundstrand.pdf.
Deere of course says there oil is better, cub says there oil is better and the war is on.
I personally have been using neither of those oils for just over 33 years in my big IH tractors and yes Green ones also, with no problems. but that is just my choice.
One might find some useful information in this old manual.

FWIW:

1) Farm & Fleet, Tractor Supply, etc., do not carry Hy-Tran !! They do carry some Hydraulic fluid which meets some IH specifications but it won't have the patented moisture suspension capabilities of real Hy-Tran!!

2) This past week, I purchased 5 Gallons of bulk genuine HY-Tran from a local Case/IH dealer for slightly less that $60.00. That's about $3.00 per quart. Given that a Hydrostatic uses about 7 qts per change...

3) IMHO, If you can 't handle $21.00 per tractor (plus the filter), you need a different hobby... like maybe tiddledy-winks or basket weaving....

4) A $100.00 Tractor?? Why don't you try shopping around and price a new equivalent to that "ole Cub Cadet" garden tractor!! When you find those prices begin above the $3000.00 mark, then you'll know exactly why it pays to spend a few dollars take good care of that old "hundred dollar" tractor!!

I think I paid $5 a quart for the 2.5 gallon jug the last time I bought some at the Case IH dealer. It's cheaper the more you buy (as in the size of the jug).
