Won't stop motoring
Ok, I have been at this for a week now. SG starts tractor great. But doesn't seem to charge. Grounding the F terminal loads down the SG so I guess it works.? Replaced the VR and verified to be wired completely as shown in the schematics in the reference section. Also, the thing that really drives me nuts, when I shut the tractor off, the engine stops, but the SG keeps motoring. Help would really appreciates.

I bought a cheap aftermarket foreign made VR off ebay once and it did the same thing. Got the correct VR and no problems. What I am saying is there are some cheap VR's being sold that are listed as working on a Cub Cadet, but they don't actually work right.

Re: the run on S/G. Take the VR off...take the lid off. You'll find one of the points has a nub on it where metal has been transferred from one contact to the other. Take a small file and file it smooth.
I think you'll see that fixes the issue of run-on. Someone smarter than I am (of which there are many) posted this to help me out and it worked great. John |
Looked at the points. All look ok. When I take the BAT wire off, both solenoids start "chattering", I guess this is what they are supposed to do. The engine and SG will both stop when turned off like this. The amp meter never goes into the charge zone at any time unless I am manipulating it.

First off, we need to know what model tractor you are working on.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there were three different VR's used on IH built Cub Cadets. If you put a later style VR on an older tractor you have to leave one of the wires off or it will continue to crank when the key is turned off... Actually it will start cranking as soon as the battery is connected. |
I put a new VR on that the local small engine shop said was the correct one for this machine(model 129). The box says GDR6029. The paperwork says AHGDR6029.

Have you checked/replaced the IGN switch?

You bought an Aftermarket V/R. This is what you got. The BIG question is....How is it wired...???

I'm with Roland, it sure sounds like you improperly placed the wires for your application.
There is a good possibility the terminals on the reg. are not the same even if they are in the same location as the origional regulator. You need to do a little detective work. |
