62 Original: Steering wheel removal

I've been tearing down my 62 original and I'm having trouble getting the steering wheel off. I got the cap nut off, but how do I remove the the wheel? Does it pull of? Twist off? Do I need a puller to remove it? I'm stuck.

The Steering Wheel is on a splined shaft. Try soaking the hub/shaft splines with something like PB Blaster for a while. You may need a puller.

It took me a long time of soaking it in PB. I put the nut on 1/2 way, and hit the top of the nut while having someone pull on it. But remember the wheel will only travel as far as the nut is backed off. Just a word of caution; You WILL need to replace the nut by doing this, because it will flatten it out, but a new one isn't a lot at a hardware store and if your restoring it, you will want a new one anyways.

If that doesn't work, I have also used a gear puller before.

if your going to use a puller dont use it right on the shaft find a way to pull on the nut on there avoid hitting the shaft because it will mush room up and then be junk.
