Converting to power steering?
I have a IH built 782. My question is can power steering parts from newer model Cub Cadets work? I found a person that is parting out a tractor, but has no hood on it so cant tell me the model. I can buy all related power steering parts for $75. Should I stay away and enjoy what I have. Has anyone tried this out? Thanks

For $75 I'd buy the parts and make it work. You'll need the steering column, the cylinder, lines and fittings from the hydro pump, the left kingpin/spindle and any other hardware and brackets/mounts that you can get.

I can get everything.

I agree with CubQuest, only I would get the whole thing, use what you need, put spare parts on the shelf and sell what you don't want. Then do whatever it takes to make it work.
The only thing is you need to di is RUN there and get the stuff. This is a win, win situation. |

I put power steering on my 782 this past summer love it!!
I used a Ross 5 port unit off a 316 Green tractor and cylinder. I bought them from evil bay. There seems to be a lot more "green" tractors being parted out than cubs. The steering wheel wound up 1" lower than stock, but no problem. the hydraulic lines were constructed from 3/8" brake/fuel tubing available from any auto parts. I made a bracket for the cyl to attach to the frame, and reinforced the spindle to attach the other end. there were some clearance problems of the L. front tire rubbing the cyl on a Left turn. this was solved by making longer axle stubs (2-1/2" to both sides) and it greatly reduced the tendency to tip on steep side hill inclines or when turning at higher speeds. I will try to post a few pix's I would do the conversion again with no hesitation, but I would look at a cub cylinder to see if it is possibly smaller?? |
The only problem I can see you running into, is if you get the setup from a cyclops or newer tractor, they had tilt wheel and I here that can be a REAL PAIN to adapt to a x82 series tractor. usually if you want power steering, they try to get it from one of the 72 series supers. Some thing like a 1872, 1772, 1572.
