Kohler Engine Identification

Is there any way to identify a single cylinder Kohler Magnum Engine if the decal on the blower housing has been destroyed? Surely they stamped them in the metal some where, although none are obvious. I hate to take it a part just for sport.

I Think there is a # on the crank housing. I could be wrong.....didn't want you to go without an answer.

Thanks Mouse, I'll look harder. Since I have ran it some and gotten to know it a little it seems to be leaking a little at the head gasket, so this winter I will pull the head and replace the gasket and measure the bore. With the power the thing has it almost has to be a 16hp.

:bigthink:

Well, this can be a little tricky. Lets start with what model of Cub the Kohler is in....?? You could always pull the head and measure the bore diameter and stroke and that will get you into the Model Family. The crank dimensions on the PTO end can narrow it down also.

Pictures would be most helpful...!!!:WWP:

A 16 would have 10 headbolts and 10, 12 and 14 have 9. Also 16 and 14 had 30mm carbs while the 10 and 12 had 26mm.

My 12hp in my 129 has a K301 cast into the cylinder block on the PTO end of the block. (K301=12hp of course) I'm not sure if they did this with any others.??

I have a 10hp with K301 cast into the cylinder block on the PTO end of the block. The eng was sold to me as a 12hp but the cylinder mics out to 10hp. Didn't think at the time to look close and see if it had ever been sleeved but it is definetly a 10 horse bore and I don't think anyone would sleeve a 12 down to a 10.

Thanks for the responses. I've been helping a friend move the last couple of days, so I will try to get time to check the block closer on the PTO end and count head bolts. I'm behind in the picture dept. also, I've been promising pictures of some other stuff, I will try to do better. The engine is in a 682 that I bought and isn't the correct engine for the tractor.
