Clyde67's 1641 trans

Did a re-seal job for Clyde67 today for his 1641. He has a rear that the PO ran with the bolts loose and it tore it up pretty bad. Duke had given me a rear out of a 1440 that was run with a blend of ATF and Hy-Tran. From what I could see the oils were not compatible and they gelled up and plugged the filter. The PO had the complete transaxle and pump replaced. Cleaned it out and replaced the axle seals and cover gasket. Think it will give him many years of good service. I figured that the pump was toast so I pulled the charge pump and it looks like new. Think I’m going to open it up and check it out a little further. I’m starting to think it stopped moving because of a plugged filter and it may be a good pump. If that’s the case it’s a shame that whoever worked on it didn’t take the time to do a good clean out on this rear and put it back in service. I guess it’s good for Clyde. Next project is my 2182 that is leaking like a screen and has a broken front trans mount. Pretty much the same job as this one except that I have to replace the front cover. I am so glad I built a decent shop to work in.:biggrin2:

I'm glad too Sam!

By the way, you're incredible. Thank you again for all the help. You've been an invaluable resource and I can't wait to get this puppy running strong up here!!!!

Great work Sam! Clyde I'm glad you can put that rear end to work!

Sam the bad part is they did they did the same thing to the rear end they replaced this one with. Uncle Gene picked it up for $250 with the spare rear end. He had the cub dealer clean out the rear and it's been using it to mow with. Tuff luck for the PO but good luck for Clyde and Uncle Gene.:beerchug:

So, I got the trans yesterday. Got to drag it into the garage around 8pm. I started working on the reassembly of the 1641 around 8:30pm or so and finished around 12 Midnight. I was very determined to get it done!!! But it wasn't too bad up here in my nice heated garage...

So far so good. I ran it a bit more today, checked for leaks, re-tightened a few things, and made sure the fluids looked good. Seems to have worked out great. The only issue I had yesterday was a leak in the fuel line right at the shut-off valve, but it turned out to be the awful hose I bought at the local hardware store. Super rigid stuff, so I just replaced the short length and all is well. Tomorrow I plan on putting a bit of gar in the tank, running some Seafoam through and getting the engine to run a bit more smoothly. It seems to bog down a bit under load but it's getting better as I run it more. I have no idea how long this thing sat for, but it's definitely a world apart from when I picked it up!

I also still have to re-install what I guess is the brake return spring. Seems to be a bit of a challenge.

Any interest in doing a thread on the work I did on it since I got it a few weeks ago? I have some pictures to share if anyone is interested. Let me know!

Here are some pics of the new rear!

Thanks guys. Took her out today for a test drive. All is well! I will re-inspect later today after it sits for a while, but I think I can finally move on from that issue!

Here's a photo from after riding around the yard for a while.
