Rebuild help!!!
 

Hi, I have a kohler K341A spec# 71154A serial# 6354569 16 hp that i'm trying to rebuild. I've ran into a slight problem with finding a piston. I'm not sure if i have the new style, or old style. The engine is 100% original. Its either kohler part # 45 874 11-s or 45 874 01s Thanks in advance -Paul

I would call or email both of them. They have lots more then listed on their web sites.

They will need to know bore size and if the rod is standard size or if it needs to be machined to fit the crank.

Old style is a round piston. At the pin area- does it intersect a cylinder or is it shaped? Look in the manual as they show all 3 clearly. Mine was flat with cross-hatch which is style C.
THey are a, c, d listed. D is Mahle which would be marked on the top by the funny M trademark.
piston and rod have to match in style. You can examine the rod too.. one is thicker at the piston which is the old style. Same height (thickness) as the rod beam is new style(thinner). Old would have a boss.

If your going to buy new- kohler stuff is EXPENSIVE. Std, +003, 010,020 or 030? I would go new style for both parts. You should get a machine shop to mic the crank and see if it's ok. It might need to be turned down for a undersized rod bearing. I just did this drill- and replaced nearly everything. Sometimes you can find a new mahle piston on ebay ~100.

I couldn't find one in 020 at the time and purchase ebay piston/rod and if it holds together.. I'll be quite happy. I did find valves on ebay very reasonable for Kohler parts.
