hi guys i need some help how do you test a starter generator as iam not sure if mine is fried or not thanks thad

You will need to explain your situation better...there are two parts to the starter generator. It "starts" and it "generates"...

If your tractor will not turn over, take off your starter generator, lay it on a board, place your negative clamp of your battery charger on the casing of the generator for ground, and place your positive clamp on the "A" terminal of your starter generator. DO NOT clamp this on the terminal, just lightly touch it, you don't want to be fusing the two parts together...

If it turns over but will not generate any power (will not charge battery), simply find your voltage tester and hold it on your battery while running 1/2 throttle or more. Make sure the tester reads DC volts. If it's working properly, it should be running right around 14 volts.

If its not doing either one, either the armature is grounding out or it's time to overhaul it.

Check out video 1 of my 147 restoration series. I cover several tests for your S/G. You do not have to remove it from the tractor, in fact it's easier to leave it on.

Since he says its "fried", I don't understand the benefits of leaving it on the tractor. In fact, what should happen is it should come off and be cleaned up, armature turned and tested, bearings replaced and new brushes installed. just my .02

He's not sure what's going on with it, and that's what my advice was based on. The tractor makes a handy bracket/bench test bed. Fully agree that once the initial tests are done, it is a perfect time to perform all the chores you describe.

okay guys hear is where i stand when i turn the key switsh 3/4 of the time all i will hear is the starter relay clicking but then if i keep trying i can get the starter generator to turn but only if the belt is not on then for no reason it will not turn when the key is shut off and tried again i have replayed brushes and cleaned the armature and new bearing baout 3 months ago and when i test the wire from f termainal to ground it will slow down say about 5or 10rpms what is you thoughts also when tested with a battery chargr i can stop it turning by grabing the pulley and turnes more like a 6 volt would turn
