1968 Cub Cadet 124 value
 

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I'm looking at trying to buy my first cub cadet. I just wanted to get some input before making an impulse buy. The tractor I found is a 68 model 124 with a mower deck. The ad says that the tractor runs great but the blades won't engage on the mower. He is asking $400 for it, is it worth it? And what kinds of issues would cause the mower not to work and how expensive are the possible causes to fix?

My first thought is that the front PTO is in need of a rebuild or is shot. You could have up to 100 dollars in repairing the front PTO. 400 isn't bad, depending on the condition. Just a thought, given no pictures or any further information.

Some thing to keep in mind, if the front pto is not working check it out closely and make sure every thing is still tight on the end of the crankshaft and the set screws have not come loose which could cause the clutch parts and key to wear in to the end of the crankshaft and ruin it. I found this out the hard way on a 128 I purchased last summer and had to put a new crankshaft in it which led to a complete engine rebuild :bash2:

I think $400 is too much for a tractor that doesn't work. I would tell him its only worth $200, take it or (you) leave it.

In other words, I think you can get more for your Cub Cadet dollar than what he's offering. Let the urge to buy cool a little and keep looking.

Thanks for all the input guys. I tried to get pictures but the seller is unavailable. $400 did sound like a lot for a broke mower as well. These things go for a lot of money around Indianapolis. There is a guy asking $500 for a rusted out supposedly running original with a plow. And there are a few others in the same price range with no attachments. Guess I need to keep waiting for the right one. I was really hoping to get a narrow frame model with a mower and plow.

Just because they are asking these ridiculous prices doesn't mean they are actually getting them. I'd keep looking...deals will eventually show up. Or drive to northern Illinois...my Dad tells me auction prices for Cubs are lower than they ever have been.
