balance gears
Hi All
Im on my veary first engine rebuild its a kohler k321 and have it down to the crank and the piston is out.Now on saturday its getting the cylinder wall checked because it has allready been bored .020 over at 1 point in time and the balance gears ar still in there. I have read in older post that some people have taken them out.Are they realy needed,or are pullers just taken them out?All opinions are wellcome. Thanks for your time and help Rod |

Balance gears
The balance gears in mine were loose and flopping around. I'm surprised they hadn't come apart and destroyed the inside of the engine. The front one came right out, the one in back was not that easy to get out.
I reassembled it without them. |
The balance gears also seem to cause some debate. If it were me, I would personally leave them out. The needle bearings are notorious for wearing out. Once that happens, the gears become loose, flop around, and then usually exit the engine via a hole in the block! Some like to leave them it to reduce vibration and a rough running engine. My 169 runs and rattles the tractor with the balance gears in it. Just the nature of the beast, single bore 16 horse. Needless to say, the balance gears will soon be coming out of the 169's engine cause the K341 13 fins are impossible to find, except with the afore mentioned hole in the block. :biggrin2: I'd leave 'em out. :TwoCents:

Thanks all they will be coming out then like i said this is my first rebuild and just wanted to be sure

I just removed them from my K321 and I haven't noticed any difference in how the engine runs. the back ones are tough to get out when the engine is not torn down.
