'62 O help/ info needed
What are the signs that the seal at the end of the axle tubes are shot? The right side axle tube is almost gushing with grease and HyTran(?) at the end of the tube and leaving quite a mess on the rim, I'm also aware that these seals are NLA. So would something like a crush sleeve work in its place or do I need to start looking for a new rear for my O? I'm also seeping Hytran at the plug on the right side of the transmission and the shifter plate. Any idea why I'm seeping so much fluid? Is there a way to stop the leaks? and should i just dump the existing Hytran and fill with new? And how in the world do i fill the rear with Hytran?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get new seals from NAPA or anywhere else that carries seals if you take one of the old ones in and have the cross reference it.

I'd think one could be fabricated too, from heavy felt or leather. There's not any pressure to speak of.
You must be on some serious inclines! John |
First the seal is on the diff not the axle tube. The grease was over applied in the axle tube and mixing with the hytran. Replace the seal at the diff and the bushings can be bad on the axle tube. There should never be hytran in the axle tube of an O. later cubs it's a different story

Mmzullo is correct. The bushing near the rear wheel is not the oil seal. The oil seal on the "O" is inside the axle housing near the differential. The area from the oil seal to the bushing is only lubed by grease applied through the grease fitting. As far as I know the "O" is the only cadet with this set up. We got our bushings from, as far as I recall, Chris Westfall, one of our site supporters. Even if you do not see them online call to see if they are available. While you have things apart, check the brake too. These machines have been around a loooong time and who knows what they have been through, If they could only talk we would have enough info to write a book on each of them.

Thank you all for the replies and ill check it out. After looking at it again it looked more like poor or degraded grease from the axle tubes from the way it was seperating. Ill break it down and see whats going on. And yeah im on some good hills out here, nothing with a drastic grade but still enough to make the cubs work hard.

The trans is more than likely too full it it leaks out of the shifter. It may have water in it that comes in from the shifter.
