149 project starts tonight (done 8/29/12)
The ACR is not working on my 149. I have a new spring, and a complete gasket set. I'm going in... I'm also going to remove the balance gears while I have it open.
I'm going to spend a few hours on it a couple nights this week to get started and then use a few days of a vacation week next week to finish up. Tonight's project will be removing sheet metal in preparation for engine removal. Any help or hints would be appreciated. I had the engine out of my 125 last summer and I imagine that doing it on the 149 should be about the same and maybe even easier with the removable tunnel cover. I guess the 14 hp is a bit heavier that the 12 hp, but I'm going to strip as much weight from it as possible before I try lifting it. Hope to have some pictures for you all tomorrow. |
My advice in engine removal? Lots of patience, a couple adult beverages, penetrating oil, and more patience. Make sure you have everything disconnected before you start lifting it out.
This is coming from a guy that has never taken an engine out of a cadet. :biggrin2: Good luck. |
Good luck, Steve! Looking forward to your updates and pics.

I've had the same symptoms as that and it was a loose belt on the S/G.
Lift the front end and put a jack-stand under the front of the frame so you can pivot the axle to get those pesky front engine bolts out/in. Don't forget to block the rear wheels both ways. |

Engine Removal
Its pretty simple - if you have a digital camera use it. Helps counter act the adult beverages when its time to re-assemble.

I had a pretty good start last night.
We'll see when it looks like this again... http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07167.jpg Hood and headlights off. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07169.jpg Grill off. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07170.jpg Choke and throttle cables disconnected, Fuel tank removed, coil wired disconnected, and oil drained. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07171.jpg I figured it would be easier to remove the PTO with engine still bolted down to the tractor than if I did it on the workbench. The set screws came out with very little trouble. I removed the muffler for some more work space. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07172.jpg Starter/generator was next. (Lew I know it is not a loose belt. I have tried 3 different s/gs and tightened the belt well every time) I also removed all the sheet metal from the tower. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07174.jpg Not too bad a lift will all that stuff removed. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07175.jpg Up on the work bench. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07178.jpg This will need some attention. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07179.jpg I have an extra from the 125, so I'm going to bring both to the metal shop at work and ask one of the guys to clean up the better one, or both if he has the time. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...t/DSC07181.jpg It went pretty well. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to get this far. One of the screws on the PTO is loose so I'll have to read up on adjustment. I also want to replace the bearing while its apart. It was kind noisy and it spins kinda roughly. Next I'll get the engine open and attack the balance gears and look into the ACR operation. It does run very well with no smoke, so I don't plan to do any kind of rebuild. Just deal with the balance gears and ACR and clean things up a bit. Not sure if I'll get back at it tonight, but I'll keep you all posted. |
Coming along nicely Steve!:beerchug:
