Ignition Coil on 100 Smok'n!!
 

Was using the 100 to haul some top soil tonight with the #4 trailer. Third load I got onto the tractor and noticed spots all over the front tire. I kinda looked at it wondering what it was, then I smelt gas and smoke, looked to the left of the engine and a stream of oil/steam was spraying from the top of the ignition coil onto the carb and the hot engine block. YIKES! :Shocked: I looked again to confirm what I had seen and then shut 'r down! I turned off the gas and noticed the spray still coming out of the nicely formed crack in the top about 1/2" long. As I got off the tractor, not sure if I was going to be running for an extinguisher or what...noticed what seemed like oil collecting on the sub fram for the front blade. :HeadScratch: These ignition coils have oil in them?

So needless to say I need to get a new coil tomorrow. What sorta numbers am I looking for on this part? Think I can snag one at AutoPro/NAPA instead of going to Cub dealer? Should I be replacing the condenser as well at the same time? What causes this, old age?

Touched the "oil" or what ever it was to see if I could tell what it was....DARN HOT is what it was! :bash2:

Any suggestions or other fixes I might need to do at this time would be appreciated. Wife is :rant: about the deck not getting built before holidays. I am trying! :beer2:

I think the oil in the older coils contain pcb's mmmmmm

Try napa for your coil.

Yup time for a new coil. I have a leaky gas tank on my 123 and it drips right on top of my coil. I was working it realy hard and noticed the coil was bubbling around the seem at the terminals. Now ive got the 123 parked until i can get the leak resolved. Any idea on how the crack formed on the coil?

Well, my skin didnt fall off yet from the pcb's :biggrin2: Not sure what caused the crack, thinking it was old age? Is there anything I need to be asking about new coil? Is there resistors or anything strange in these? Or just need a 12v coil with two terminals on it, one for positive lead and the other for condensor to attach?

YES, the older coils were filled with oil. I would venture an educated guess, that the coil just finally decided to short out & die. After all, 40+ yrs of heat and vibration will take it's toll.

Here is what will work well in your Cub...

I am certainly no expert but have been told by those that are to also replace the condenser along with the coil. The condenser protects your points from high voltage or maybe it is amperage but regardless if the condenser goes bad the points are next.

Have a new coil on order from NAPA, supposed to have it tomorrow morning. Cost me $41.00 with the discount at work. Can't complain too much about that! Tractor won't run the way it is now. Used the Poulin Pro lawn tractor tonight to pull the #4 loaded with stone dust. HA! Did ok on the flat, but once I got to the slight incline of the lawn. FELL ON ITS FACE! No joking, took me 7 tries to get up the incline. That's sad! 16hp couldn't pull it with the loaded trailer. The 100 would do it almost at idle speed. Yep, they certainly don't make them like they used to! Granted, its a small garden tractor compared to a lawn tractor, but I figured the newer tires with more tread and bigger motor would have had no problems. Proved me wrong! So hopefully I can get the 100 running tomorrow night and get some work done.

Yes, the oil provided electrical insulation and probably a bit of coolant. If it's from the 60's it probably did contain PCBs (but don't worry TOO much, so did every pole transformer in the world until the 70's or so). The top is probably bakelite on an old coil... a million temp cycles later it can crack ! :-)

Its an interesting design to have the spark coil just below the fuel spigot isnt it? :-)
