Kohler 161 compression
Hi there...I just put on a new head gasket, lapped the valves, checked the valvet to tappet clearances and decarboned the head. I then did a dry compression test (wish I had done one before) to see where I stood. Compression was just around 120 psi. My question is, what should a normal or acceptable compression reading be on this 7hp kohler. It sure does seem more "energetic" after doing this little tune-up!!!! Thanks in advance,

Doesn't anyone know what a good compression reading would be on my 7hp kohler? I searched the internet without much luck. Thanks,

120 psi sounds pretty good to me.

The manual says 110-120 psi.

jfinney,
Just out of curiosity, how did you check your compression? |
Thanks guys. Tater, which manual did you find the 110-120 range in? Yosemite Sam, I took out the plug, put the compression gauge over the hole, put the engine at full throttle and cranked it over with the ignition. Did I do it incorrectly? I was borrowing my neighbors guage and that is what he told me to do. Thanks for the insight. Jason

Compression test
From my experience you were correct in the way you checked your compression. Just make sure the throttle and choke were open and you turned the engine over at least 4 revolutions.

J Finney: The compression pressure reading of 110-120 PSI is found under Specifications on page 4 of IH GSS-1292, International Cub Cadet Engine Service Manual.
